Sabyasachi Mukherjee: Bollywood goes global

Call him Sabya for short: Indian fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee creates intricately-ornamented, henna-dyed clothes that should appeal to quirky indie It Girls as much as they already do to Bollywood starlets.
Winner of the 2005 National Award for costume design (India's Oscars equaivalent), Mukherjee dipped in to the palette of the streets of his native Calcutta for his New York Fashion Week presentation, creating scalloped mini dresses, floor-length skirts and giant slacks in earthy shades of red clay, khaki green and gold.
Models wore black-framed sexy librarian glasses and their hair in tight buns as they showed off high-necked micro-dotted blouses, and tank tops festooned with buttons. Evening looks veered from indie demure—one black strapless dress would look stunning on a tastefully-tattooed Seattle coffee shop dweller—to red carpet provocative (the teeny-tiny scalloped skirts were definitely more Hollywood than Taj Mahal).
Already admired by Renee Zellweger and Reese Witherspoon, Mukherjee's quirky, colorful melting pot yields countless stylish possibilities for citizens of the world.
